At the International Magnesium Association’s Magnesium in Motion event in Livonia, Michigan, industry experts explored how magnesium can support the next generation of automotive lightweighting through optimized component design, part consolidation, advanced casting technologies, recycling and supply-chain development.

One of the key messages? Don’t simply substitute magnesium for another material. Design for magnesium.

When engineers take advantage of magnesium’s unique properties, one lighter component can potentially contribute to additional weight savings elsewhere in the vehicle, a concept known as mass decompounding.

As vehicle architectures continue to evolve, magnesium offers engineers another powerful tool for creating lighter, highly integrated automotive structures.
